CANADIAN INDIE ROCK COMES TO HARPER’S FERRY

May 4, 2006
By Chris Bateman

Aaron Saloman is one of the best-known independent musicians in his hometown of Ottawa, Ontario. On Tuesday, May 9th, he will take the stage with his band at Harper’s Ferry, opening up for local favourites Tobacco Mosaic and The Radio Knights.

“I’ve been at school in Boston for a few years now,” says Aaron, “but I’m always heading back to Canada to perform . . . it’ll be great to start playing in the city where I live for a change!”

Fans of Ottawa’s music scene will remember Aaron Saloman’s former band, In Season. After national television appearances on CBC’s “Jonovision”, hundreds of shows, including bills with Kim Mitchell, Sass Jordan, and The Watchmen, and the release of a CD, Aaron went on to a successful solo career. As a solo artist, Aaron released the critically acclaimed “Muse’s Whip” EP, performed in Canada and the U.S., and backed up Canadian favourites including Michaela Foster-Marsh, Terry Tufts, and James Blondeau. Aaron’s latest EP, “No Reason”, features three new songs recorded with his rhythm section in Boston, where he is about to graduate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Dave Burlovich of IndieSoundz.com writes, “The songwriting and musicianship is peerless. I don’t know how others perceive Aaron’s voice, but I find it unique, powerful, and emotively charged.”
On Tuesday, May 9th, Aaron will hit the stage at Harper’s Ferry (158 Brighton Ave., Allston), for his debut full-band performance in Boston. Tickets are $5 for ages 21+, or $10 for 18-20, available only at the door. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Also on the bill are Legion of the Dying, along with Tobacco Mosaic, and The Radio Knights. Aaron Saloman’s official site has up-to-date info at www.aaronmusic.com.

BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR CANADIAN MUSICIANS

January 31, 2006
By Dave Durlovich

XM Satellite Radio Canada is now up and broadcasting all over Canada and the United States. XM is the first Canadian broadcaster to transmit Canadian programming content, produced by Canadians, in Canada, to our neighbours to the south. XM directly credits the support of Canadian independent recording artists, adding that their success would not have materialized if not for their support. Now that XM is open for business, they feel it's time to spread the word about our great Canadian music scene. In order to do that, they need music, lots of music...

Artists can submit their music to XM Satellite Radio Canada. The channel that will be most appealing to English artists is channel 52. It is a rock based format built around the "new, emerging, now" theme. They play music from both signed and unsigned acts. If it's good they'll play it.

Artists should send their material to Cameron Carpenter, Director of Canadian Talent Development or Jeff Leake, the Music Director for 52.

The mailing address is:

XM Satellite Radio
Suite 1105
330 Front Street West
Toronto, Ontario

Additionally, The Iceberg - Channel 95 on Sirius Satellite Radio - is 100% Canadian music. Available to more than three million American subscribers offers a unique opportunity to new artists to reach the American
market. Their programming mix devotes 25% of broadcast time to new and uncharted artists and are actively searching for the hottest indie bands to play on air.

The Iceberg format is Triple A - Or Adult Album Alternative - offering an eclectic blend of Rock, Pop, Alternative, Folk and R&B musical styles. Artists simply need to send their releases and bio information to Liz Janik directly at Iceberg Satellite Radio.

INDIESOUNDZ AIMS TO BECOME THE NEXT BIG THING

You know how there's too much crap on the radio? How there's too much DJ prattle and too little music? And when there is music, it's the same formulaic song that you've already heard eight times that day? My friend, you need the Internet.

Enter Indiesoundz, an online community that connects fans of independent music with indie artists from all over the world. Featuring radio streams, downloadable MP3s, and a whole lotta content, the site is all about getting music out to the people. "The goal of Indiesoundz," said site creator Dave Burlovich, "is to bring good indie talent to the attention of an audience that wants an alternative to the mainstream and provide said talent to (that) audience."

The site covers just about any type of music you can think of, from rock and country to pop and dance, plus all kinds that can't easily be slotted into one genre or another. Artists, all of whom are hand-picked by Burlovich and his staff of volunteers, hail from all over the world, including Scotland, Germany and right here in Canada.

"The process (of selecting artists) is a two-way street," said Burlovich, who made Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 Most Creative People in 1999 for creating the popular online radio station LoudFactory.com. "We don't just wait for people to come to us, we actively seek out new talent. The process really breaks down to a short audition. If we like what we hear, we keep listening and ultimately make a decision."

Another key component of Indiesoundz is Friday Night Live (FNL), a weekly radio show featuring electronic music and produced by FNL house DJ (Brendan) Clay. Listeners can download the shows (usually ranging in length from 1-3 hours), spun by Clay or one of his guests, who have included Hannah Wild, Emass and the winner of this year's Icebox DJ competition, Hijaxx. As with other Indiesoundz artists, FNL features DJs from all over the planet, from Australia — Clay himself hails from Sydney — to the UK underground.

" There are tons of websites out there that let bands post music, but none that really let them create a community," said the site's resident tech guru Thomas Sant. "With Indiesoundz, a band or artist can post concert dates, CD releases or just stories for their fans to read. We are also setting up an online store for bands to sell their band swank."

The site and its community ideal have received tremendous support from its artists, including Ottawa artist Aaron Saloman, who believes that Indiesoundz has the potential to open up the musical landscape to new ideas. "I think it is important to create and support an independent music community because that is the only way we will ever break out of the rut that popular music is in," said Saloman. "It is only through offering easily accessible, quality independent music in the way Indiesoundz does"
